What is KARUNA Yoga?

Compassionate action toward oneself and others is at the core of the Karuna Yoga Teacher Training Program. Our goal is to produce a yoga community built on the philosophy of Karuna, a sanskrit word referring to any action that is taken to diminish the suffering of others; or compassionate action.

Our “compassionate action” approach is rooted in the Sivananda tradition and draws from both Hindu and Buddhist philosophies, as well as from other teachings.

The weekend modules immerse students in Karma Yoga, Ayurveda, Relaxation, Union, Non-violence, and Anatomy and physiology. The program introduces participants to a wide range of yoga techniques and adaptations. In addition, guest speakers, field trips and special assignments build upon requirements of the Yoga Alliance.

Program
The Karuna Yoga Program meets the Yoga Alliance requirements for the 200-hour Teacher Training Certification by incorporating 100 hours of techniques (Hatha, Pranayama, Meditation), 35 hours of methods and practicum, 20 hours of Anatomy and Physiology, as well as 45 hours of philosophy, ethics, ayurveda, and yogic lifestyle. Several modules include a number of observation/feedback hours to prepare students for leading a yoga class. The program consists of 9 required weekend training modules. Participants are responsible for obtaining required reading materials and finishing the corresponding study guides before attending each module. Successful achievement of all program requirements qualifies participants to register with Yoga Alliance at the 200 Hour level.
